Antiquity in Korea

Tracing back to the pages of historical texts such as Samguk Sagi and Samguk Yusa, Korean martial arts reveal their ancient roots, deeply embedded in the martial culture of the Three Kingdoms period. These documents chronicle the martial exploits and the indigenous martial arts that flourished among the kingdoms, offering a glimpse into the foundational practices that shaped traditional Korean martial arts.

The documented battles and competitions highlight a martial ethos that was integral to Korean culture, emphasizing skills and techniques unique to the region. This period laid the groundwork for the evolution of ancient Korean martial arts, reflecting a rich history of martial practices that were honed and refined through centuries of cultural exchanges and dynastic influences.

As you explore further into this study, it’s important to acknowledge the intricate web of historical, cultural, and technical factors that have sculpted Korean martial arts into what they’re today.

Emergence of Hwarang

Building upon the martial traditions established during the Three Kingdoms period, the Silla Kingdom nurtured a unique group of elite young warriors known as the Hwarang. These elite warriors underwent rigorous martial arts training, but their education extended far beyond physical prowess.

The Hwarang were immersed in ethics, literature, and music, forming a holistic approach to their development as leaders and protectors of the Silla Kingdom. Their thorough codes of conduct and unwavering loyalty to their kingdom set them apart, embodying virtues such as loyalty, filial piety, and righteousness.

This extensive training regimen not only prepared them for battle but also for leadership roles within their society. The Hwarang’s significant influence on the development of Korean martial arts and culture is undeniable, marking them as a foundational element in the history of Korea’s martial traditions.

Koryo Dynasty and Martial Arts

Following the Hwarang’s foundational contributions, the Koryo Dynasty further refined Korean martial arts, introducing significant advancements in techniques and weaponry documented in the illustrated manual Muyejebo. This period was pivotal in the evolution of Korean martial arts, marked by:

  1. The development of diverse and sophisticated martial arts training methods.
  2. The refinement and introduction of new weapons, enhancing the martial arts arsenal.
  3. The compilation of these advancements in the Muyejebo, serving as a detailed guide.
  4. The role of the Koryo Dynasty in establishing a structured framework for martial arts training.

The Koryo Dynasty’s contributions weren’t merely about preserving traditions but innovatively expanding the scope and depth of Korean martial arts. This era’s strategic approach to martial arts training and its documentation in Muyejebo underscore the dynasty’s lasting impact on martial arts’ evolution.

Influence of Japanese Occupation

During the Japanese occupation, Korean martial arts, especially Taekwondo and Hapkido, experienced a significant surge in activity despite facing numerous challenges and restrictions imposed by the colonial rulers. This period was vital for the development and preservation of these arts, as martial arts practitioners navigated the complex landscape of cultural suppression.

Korean martial arts masters were pivotal in safeguarding and promoting traditional martial arts, ingeniously incorporating and adapting techniques to secure their survival. The occupation undeniably influenced the evolution and identity of Korean martial arts, embedding a resilience and adaptability that would shape their future trajectory.

The heritage of this era is a proof to the indomitable spirit of Korean martial arts masters, who played a critical role in the development of Taekwondo and Hapkido under adverse conditions.

Post-War Era and Taekwondo Unification

In the aftermath of war, Taekwondo’s emergence as a unified martial art symbolized Korea’s determination to forge a cohesive national identity through the amalgamation of its martial traditions. The unification of Taekwondo in the post-war era involved a meticulous process, steered by Korean martial art masters, to create a discipline that would resonate with the spirit of the nation.

This process involved:

  1. Merging various regional martial arts styles.
  2. Integrating techniques to develop a distinctive Korean martial art.
  3. Crafting a unified philosophy that highlights Korea’s cultural heritage.
  4. Establishing Taekwondo as Korea’s national martial art identity.

These efforts culminated in the consolidation of Taekwondo, marking a pivotal moment in Korea’s martial arts history. This unification not only preserved traditional martial arts but also propelled Taekwondo onto a global stage, albeit without delving into its international expansion yet.

Global Expansion

As you investigate the global expansion of Korean martial arts, you’ll discover that Taekwondo’s surge in worldwide popularity isn’t simply a phenomenon of sport but a dynamic medium of cultural exchange.

The critical roles of the World Taekwondo Federation and International Taekwon-Do Federation have been pivotal in fostering the sport’s international growth, highlighting the significance of organizational support in globalizing martial arts.

Additionally, the proliferation of international competitions hasn’t only raised Taekwondo’s status on the world stage but has also facilitated a deeper intercultural dialogue through athletic prowess.

Worldwide Popularity Surge

Taekwondo’s ascent to global importance, marked by its inclusion in the Olympic Games in 2000, epitomizes the martial art’s extraordinary journey from a Korean heritage to a worldwide phenomenon. This global expansion can be analyzed through several pivotal developments:

  1. The establishment of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) in 1973, which played a vital role in promoting Taekwondo as a sophisticated martial art system internationally.
  2. Taekwondo’s Olympic sport status further propelled its global recognition and appeal.
  3. The International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) has been instrumental in spreading Taekwondo across continents, enhancing its global footprint.
  4. The proliferation of Taekwondo schools worldwide reflects the martial art’s adaptability and resonance with diverse cultures, underscoring its status as a cornerstone of Korean martial arts.

Cultural Exchange Impact

Building on the global prominence of Taekwondo and Hapkido, the cultural exchange impact marks a significant phase in the expansion of Korean martial arts on the international stage. Through international collaborations and global tournaments, you’ve witnessed an unprecedented integration of traditional Korean combat techniques into the global martial arts community.

These efforts, often spearheaded by cultural exchange programs, have facilitated the dissemination of a rich martial heritage that traces back to the Buddhist monks and the Royal Court. Such exchanges haven’t only showcased the depth and versatility of Korean martial arts but have also fostered a mutual respect among practitioners worldwide.

This synergy has amplified the global footprint of Korean martial arts, underscoring the profound influence of cultural exchange in promoting and preserving these ancient practices on an international scale.

International Competitions Growth

The expansion of international competitions, such as the Olympic Games, has greatly contributed to the global growth of Taekwondo, elevating it from a national martial art to a worldwide sport phenomenon. This global expansion is underscored by several key developments:

  1. Olympic Inclusion: Taekwondo’s presence in the Olympic Games has heightened its international profile.
  2. World Taekwondo Championships: These championships draw participants from over 180 countries, demonstrating the sport’s widespread appeal.
  3. ITF Tournaments: Offering various skill levels, ITF tournaments facilitate global participation.
  4. Multi-Sport Events: Taekwondo’s inclusion in the Asian Games and Pan American Games furthers its international presence.

Analyzing these elements reveals how international competitions have been instrumental in Taekwondo’s journey from a Korean martial art to a globally recognized sport.

Olympic Ascent

In elevating taekwondo to an official Olympic sport in 2000, the Sydney Games catalyzed its burgeoning global recognition and appeal. This pivotal moment in the history of Korean martial arts marked a significant milestone, not just for taekwondo but for the global appreciation of Asian combat practices.

Governed by the World Taekwondo Federation, Olympic taekwondo competitions are meticulously structured to showcase the art’s dynamic range, incorporating both sparring and poomsae. Sparring tests the practitioners’ combat skills in real-time encounters, while poomsae evaluates their ability to perform intricate patterns with precision and grace.

The Olympic inclusion hasn’t only amplified taekwondo’s prestige but has also invigorated its practice worldwide, encouraging a deeper exploration of its techniques and philosophies.

Kwon Bop to Taekwondo

Reflecting on the Olympic ascent of taekwondo reveals its historical roots in Kwon Bop, a martial art that has greatly influenced its development. The journey from Kwon Bop to Taekwondo is a proof of the enduring legacy and continuous evolution of Korean martial arts. Here’s how:

  1. Kwon Bop emphasized striking techniques, laying the foundational principles upon which taekwondo would build.
  2. Evolution into Taekwondo saw the refinement and expansion of these techniques, with a pronounced emphasis on dynamic kicking techniques.
  3. Kicking Techniques became taekwondo’s hallmark, directly influenced by the martial strategies of Kwon Bop.
  4. Historical Roots of taekwondo in Kwon Bop underscore the rich heritage and adaptability of Korean martial arts, showcasing a lineage of combat knowledge and practice.

This change reflects the broader narrative of adaptation and growth within the sphere of martial arts.

Shotokan Karate Impact

Gichin Funakoshi’s development of Shotokan Karate in the early 20th century profoundly influenced the evolution of Korean martial arts, marking a pivotal era of cross-cultural martial arts exchange and adaptation.

Shotokan Karate InfluenceImpact on Korean Martial Arts
Strong stances and powerful strikesImproved technical precision in Taekwondo
Disciplined training methodsEmbraced rigorous training regimens
Emphasis on kata, kumite, and kihonIntegrated into Korean martial arts forms
Introduced during Japanese occupationFacilitated cross-cultural martial arts synthesis
Studied by Korean martial artistsEnriched Korean martial arts with diverse techniques

This cross-pollination enriched Korean martial arts, particularly Taekwondo, embedding Shotokan’s principles of strength, discipline, and technical mastery into its core.

Korean War and Martial Arts

The Korean War catalyzed meaningful advancements in Korean martial arts, emphasizing the development of self-defense techniques and structured combat training. This period marked a pivotal transformation in martial arts training, driven by the imperative of national defense and the challenges of modern warfare. Through this crucible of conflict, martial arts evolved to meet the exigencies of the time.

Consider the following key developments:

  1. Renewed focus on self-defense techniques to counteract the unpredictability of enemy engagements.
  2. Structured combat training programs were instituted to prepare civilians and soldiers alike.
  3. Insights gained from combat experience directly informed the adaptation and refinement of martial arts techniques.
  4. Martial arts training became a national priority, reflecting its importance in safeguarding against potential threats.

This era of innovation significantly shaped the trajectory of Korean martial arts, aligning it with contemporary needs and challenges.

Conclusion

To sum up, like the resilient pine trees of Korea’s rugged mountains, Taekwondo has withstood the tests of time and conflict, evolving from ancient Kwon Bop techniques to an Olympic sport. Its journey mirrors the Korean spirit—a blend of strength, adaptability, and unity.

Amidst the turmoil of the Korean War and foreign influences, Taekwondo emerged as a unifying force, symbolizing Korea’s indomitable will. This martial art, deeply rooted in Korea’s history, now stands tall on the global stage, a proof of its enduring legacy.

My daughter Kaia absolutely loves going to class with Matt and his team! The instructors are not only goal-oriented but also deeply focused on helping each student grow—both mentally and physically. I see noticeable progress in Kaia every time she attends class, and it's clear she's gaining confidence, discipline, and strength. We couldn’t be happier with the experience!

I highly recommend Briargate Taekwondo! From the very first experience, it was clear that this is not just a place to learn techniques and skills in Taekwondo, but also a space where personal growth and character development are prioritized. Coach McCuistion truly cares about each and every student and goes above and beyond to help them not only improve in martial arts but also become better individuals. He is devoted to helping his students develop qualities like humility, patience, resilience, and how to lead others through your actions and not just your words or a position.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced martial artist, this is an amazing place to train. The atmosphere is positive, supportive, and challenging in all the best ways. If you’re looking for a coach who is dedicated, inspiring, and truly cares about your growth, this is the place to be. I wholeheartedly recommend it!

5 stars for Briargate Taekwondo! Matt McCuistion is just an AMAZING human being and his company is what we were looking for. It’s a personalized experience when you choose a small business. We prefer this compared to the big companies in town. They know your children’s names, they care and my son has loved joining. We are so excited to see him excel 👏🏼👏🏼

Awesome teacher and great time for the kids. You can even have the kids participate if the weather is bad. Love Matthew and his family, they are great people who make you feel like family.
Evelyn Figueroa
My kids ( 5 and 8) both have been attending for a few months, and we already see a night and day difference. Not only in the dojo but everywhere else. They help your child implement respect, accountability, and discipline. I didn't know what I or my children would gain out of the program, but it has been wonderful seeing my kids build their confidence, helping more at home and even receiving positive feedback from the school staff. It was one of the best decisions to have my kids attend Briargate taekwondo.

This place has been a great place for my son! Not only does he learn taekwondo, but he also learns how to be responsible, respectful and accountable inside and outside of class! This place is so welcoming and you can tell they truly care about each and every person who walks through the door. Oh and not to mention how fun parents night out... I mean... movie night is!!
Daniel Notary
Our son loves his teachers, the students, and the challenges. He's not normally one to dive in without understanding, but Mr. McCuistion has helped answer all his questions and gives him confidence for each new task. It's a great school.

Our 3 children attend classes here and absolutely love it. Instructor McCuistion and his wife Melissa have a passion for children. Instructor Jacob is amazing. I love that there are multiple classes you can attend each week at a variety of times. They sponsor movie nights for students and non students and Saturday family bible studies. Definitely a light in our community. Highly, highly recommend!

Briargate Taekwondo welcomes families where they are and builds kids up no matter their abilities! We started here (ages 5 and 7) looking to improve focus and strength, but we stayed because they are building so much more. Response from the owner:Thank you so much, Diana! The success of our students is paramount.

Briargate Taekwondo was represented at our school's Health Jam before Thanksgiving Break. Matt came to volunteer and WOWED our staff and students with his kindness and the kids said it was one of their favorite stations. I have heard from families in our community how wonderful the event was as well as the gratitude to everyone who volunteered their time to help our students learn how to live a healthy lifestyle. We highly recommend Briargate Taekwondo to anyone looking for a way to teach excellent character traits and learn taekwondo!!
Response from the owner:Thank you so much Lindsay! We loved being a part of the Health Jam and adding value to our community!
Rebecca S.

Response from the owner:Thank you so much, Tracy! We believe in creating a safe and accepting environment for everyone.
Ned Lentz
In January 2022, the owner of this franchise location went independent from USTC. While my son and I had enjoyed USTC, we have found over the past few months that staying with Instructor McCuistion, who has re-engineered the curriculum to a more focused and pointed training, has been the best decision for us and other students to concentrate on forms, techniques, and discipline. I thoroughly enjoy the sparing, Poomsae, and other training sessions. While USTC provides several locations in Colorado Springs, they are second to Briargate when it comes to quality and traditional Kookiwan Taekwondo which is paramount to my son and I. There are several other parent-child teams that attend and I find they share a similar viewpoint. I highly recommend enrolling your child at this Dojang location if you want the best influence and training for your little student. I also strongly encourage parents to join as well to get the full experience with your son(s) and/or daughter(s).
Response from the owner:Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, Ned. We appreciate your feedback!
Marcie Wegner
We chose Briargate Taekwondo over a large taekwondo school, as the small class size, individualized instruction, caring staff, a sense of belonging and mutual respect, and the feeling that the instructors always have the students' best interests at heart.
Response from the owner:Thank you, Marcie. We appreciate your review!
Justin Newton
My son started at this school last year, and all of the staff was great from the start. Normal classes were structured, and my son received great instruction. Some events, like the periodic belt tests, felt a little chaotic, but that is understandable when there are so many kids testing at once.

We were nervous about the school rebranding and what might change at the school as result. We stayed for two reasons: location was one of the key favors in our decision to sign up at this school, and Instructor McCuistion had always encouraged a little more discipline and respect from the students than some of the younger instructors working there. We were hopeful that our son would be held to a higher standard if we stayed (which is what our son needs).

I'm pleased to say that our experience since the change has not disappointed! The professionalism and quality at this school are great. My son has been challenged to perform his skills and to focus at a higher level than ever before. We are very happy that we stayed.
Response from the owner:Thanks for the review, Justin. We are looking forward to seeing you again!
Kim Wheaton
Response from the owner:Thank you for the great review, Kim.
Jenny Rizk
Matt was very helpful, friendly and professional. The instructors here are top notch...very knowledgeable and great with the kids!
Amy Werner
We have been instant fans from the beginning. The sport and center are both new to us, but our 5 year old is learning respect, discipline, and the importance of doing well in school and at home...and those aren’t even the physical skills he’s learning! The staff is patient and does not let the little guys give up or act out. I can’t wait to see how far my little guy can/will take this in life.
Jimmy Simmons
As a recent student the facility is awesome and the instruction feels to notch. Would reccomend to everyone. Taekwondo is the way to go...
Kayden Ho
Response from the owner:Thanks for leaving such a great review of our school! We love our students and seeing where training in Taekwondo takes them in life. If there's anything we can do to improve your experience with us, please let us know!
Benjamin Ward
I started training here 9 months ago with my son and daughter. It has been a great experience. The staff members are absolutely professional and the instructors are amazing. They really emphasize developing focus, respect, and self-discipline in their students. Going in I didn’t think I was really black belt material but since I’ve begun training this has become my goal. It is really easy to get started with their no obligation trial program. I highly recommend USTC for anyone who would like to try martial arts.

THE ENTIRE STAFF AT USTC BRIARGATE HAVE BEEN ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. INSTRUCTOR TROY SMITH AND HIS TEAM WORK VERY HARD TO CREATE A FAMILY STYLE ATMOSPHERE. HONOR AND RESPECT IS TAUGHT , REENFORCED , AND EXPECTED BY EVERYONE. ALL THREE OF MY CHILDREN ATTEND AND BENEFIT GREATLY FROM THE INSTRUCTION THEY RECEIVE. WE ARE VERY THANKFUL THAT THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AND VALUES WE TEACH AT HOME ARE REENFORCED AT USTC BRIARGATE.
Justin Zeisler
Fun and instructive! Self defense and mental training make confidence. Good facility, but can get quite expensive. Some level of bargaining can be done at contract signing.
Megan Gustafson
The staff is excellent, the other attendees are fun to train with, and the school is at a great location/is always clean.
Robert Spinella
Great community and training center.
Multiple locations around town which I appreciate with my work schedule.
Natalia
A friendly and active community. I've been a part of it for almost two years now and have found myself with not just a way to keep in shape and balance my life, but a supportive group of friends with which to share the exciting journey to black belt.
Kali Hendon
Martial Arts, specifically Taekwondo, have been a huge part of my life since I was 4 years old. When I moved to Colorado Springs I did not expect to find a school that would meet up to my expectations, but the US Taekwondo Center has exceeded all expectations. Excellent school for children, teens, young adults, and families.
Jeremy Graf
I started going to classes here last August. It's a great school and I've enjoyed learning Taekwondo here for the past 9 months. The staff is super friendly and helpful. The instructors show genuine interest in each of the students and do a great job at teaching. I would definitely checking this place out if you're interested in learning martial arts.
Brandon McCollum
Great school
Paula Raising to Bless
We first joined just because we wanted our kids to learn self-defense. But after being here for almost two years now, I can say there is so much more. The discipline and respect they are taught here infiltrates every area of their lives. And mine as well. They have a weekly report card which helps the child work on and develop character. The people here are kind, friendly, and have become like a second family. They are as much invested in the character and development of my children as I am, and partner with me to bring out the best in my children. Very family oriented, they encouraged me to join as well. And now we do Taekwondo together as a family. It's much more than just martial arts training... it's a family commitment to respect, discipline, health, and character. I am so thankful we found USTC Briargate!!
